Lots of progress this week! The tile is pretty much completely installed. We were short one box of the master shower wall tile. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but its a new porcelain Calcutta tile and its been really popular, so in between when I ordered it and when it got installed, it went out of stock and is backordered until June! After the panic wore off, my lovely tile guru at Best tile in Dedham called me to tell me she found one lonely box in their Albany warehouse. Phew
I love all the tile so much. I really agonized over the tile for the master bath especially, since I'm going for a more modern vibe in this house, but not so modern that it looks totally out of place in a 200 year old colonial. For the girls bath we went with a simple greige penny round on the floor and 6x6 white tile in an offset pattern on the tub wall. I didn't want to spend any real money in here because I plan to wallpaper. For the master bath I'm really excited about the marble look without the maintenance. And I have always loved Calcutta marble. This is a good fake, non? The third picture above is the powder bath. Like most people, I'm really digging the patterned tiles, but I'm a little concerned about their trendiness. So, I decided this was the perfect room. Its a tiny bathroom and there is not a lot we can do with the space, so it was a perfect dressing up without committing to a whole kitchen floor of the patterned tile. Cabinets got delivered this week and the carpenters start next monday!

Dear Diary,
Its been 31 days since my last post. I've been struggling a lot with this whole process. The last couple of weeks of New England weather has not helped the situation. Our heat still isn't set up so we have been heating the house with electric space heaters. Thats right, 2400 SF with 3 electric space heaters. This requires daily checks to make sure we haven't burn the place down or the electricity draw hasn't tripped a breaker. Even with all of this, we are still 2 weeks behind on plaster because of the snow. The plasterers were very patient however with the current situation and it looks great. I'm daring to hope that we might (Finally!!!) be on the upswing. Tile starts tomorrow and the gas meter is being installed, so we will finally have heat. Now that the board and plaster is complete and with tile starting, we can start the bulk of the paint prep. Paul deserves some major credit. I do this all day for a living, but managing this project has been stressful. In my mind at night I just rehash over and over the really long list of things we still have to do...and that list is long. He has been a rock though. Endlessly helpful and very positive. He gets excited when anything happens. I see it all the time at work - renovations really test a marriage. From now until May there will be a lot more posts as all the fun stuff starts happening. All the ordered light fixtures have arrived and I love all of them. Our tile is at the house and the kitchen cabinets shipped today. The best part is - I put an SOS out to my mom and she is now coming for 6 weeks to watch the girls on the weekends so both Paul and I can work on the house stuff. Its a big deal since we are living in a 900 SF apartment right now! I can't wait! |
